WHAT IS LOCAL MINISTRY?

Local Ministry exists to empower God’s people to be a conduit of His blessing to the city they reside in. The local church is called to take on the posture of a servant to seek the flourishing of the neighborhoods we live in and in the city we call home.


God entrusts His church with the ministry of reconciliation. Every person falls short of the glory of God and deserves death. However, if anyone puts their faith and trust in Christ, he or she can be forgiven of their sins and walk in the newness of life through Jesus. God’s word tells us every person must hear the gospel in order to have the opportunity to believe (Romans 3:23; 6:23; 10:12-17). Because many have yet to put their faith and trust in Jesus, believers share the gospel with others and serve as His ambassadors throughout the world (2 Cor 5:11-21). The gospel is the power of God unto salvation, so we refuse to be ashamed to share it with others. As recipients of God’s grace, we hold back nothing that is profitable to those around us (Romans 1:16; Acts 20:20), and as members of the local church, we take up God’s invitation to seek the welfare of our city. We know that the city's welfare and the flourishing of the local church can share a common interest for the good of its citizens (Jer. 29:7).

HELP & HOPE IN THE GOSPEL

Our Triune God’s grace brings salvation and restoration to our lives and moves us to extend His gospel and grace to others. We seek to walk in Christ's perfect example and the commands he gave to his disciples.

  • Jesus commanded His disciples to go and make disciples by the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8).
  • Jesus commanded His disciples to love our neighbors as we love ourselves (Mark 12:28-31).
  • Jesus’ compassion drove Him to act mercifully on behalf of another (Matt. 9:36-38; Romans 5:6-8; 1 Timothy 2:5-6).

NEIGHBORHOOD 360 ASSESSMENT

In the Old Testament, Nehemiah began the work of restoration in Jerusalem by going community to community to survey the current state of the city, committing time to observation so he might grow in understanding and strategic planning for the work that needed to be accomplished. We believe that our work in the city should begin in much the same way, assessing the unique situation of every community around us so that we might be best positioned for developing understanding and strategy – both personally and corporately.


In 2022, our church developed a resource called “Neighborhood 360 Assessment,” dedicated to educating and mobilizing members toward the unique opportunities to bring hope and help to our communities. This resource represents a survey of the four strategic communities surrounding our church building: Mud Island, Uptown, Midtown, and Downtown/South Main. This assessment offers members a unique insight into the opportunities for ministry in our “Jerusalem” of Memphis (Acts 1:8).
